By Larry C. Paxton
November 2015 was a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde kind of month. To understand that it is a good idea to quickly review the end of October. Overall October ended with a very positive result for stocks and commodities. But the reality was that there was a bit of a downturn in the last week. In the first week of November Dr. Jekyll showed up and there was a nice gain. But the second week Mr. Hyde took over and there was a significant downturn. The third week Dr. Jekyll returned and there was a big jump back. In the final week and last day of the month Mr. Hyde reappeared for a dip, not a big one, but a noticeable one.
There seemed to be a lot of reasons for the swings. The economy appears to continue to grow at a modest rate, to the point where it is a foregone conclusion that the Federal Reserve will most likely finally make an almost minimal raise of the short term interest rate. But oil and minerals prices continue to fluctuate, there is uncertainty about global issues like immigration and refugees, much of it related to unrest in the Middle East. Climate change is becoming a bigger issue and getting more attention, and there are no easy answers, other than the fact there will be an unpredictable impact on economies worldwide.
What will happen in December? Once again, there are a lot of questions and very little consensus. For the holiday season what will be the growth of online sales, and what impact will that have on traditional retail storefronts? Will oil prices stabilize? What will it take to bring stability and peace to the Middle East? What will really happen if the Fed raises interest rates? There are a myriad of additional questions and the resulting complexities make just about any prediction both plausible and unlikely.
During this holiday season the staff of PBRMarketTools.com wishes you the very best as you celebrate through the traditions you cherish. May it be a season of peace and hope as we enter what will be an interesting New Year.
