By Larry C. Paxton
Things were going so well at the beginning of July. Key economy indices continue to show improvement, to the point where the Federal Reserve talked about fading out of its Quantitative Easing program but saying any increases in interest rates are far down the road for now. Major stock exchanges reached new highs. For many, especially the bull market people, cautious optimism was becoming a little less cautious.
But then there was also the unexpected and tragic downing of the Malaysian Airlines international flight while over a contentious area of Ukraine. The war there has ended up forcing the international community to declare more and more difficult economic sanctions on Russia, which also has a negative effect as well for businesses around the world that provides products and services to Russia. Then there are the other events, including the Israeli attacks on Gaza as a response to the rockets being fired further and further in Israel, the continuing effort for the control of Iraq in a religious war, the conflict in Syria, in the last few days the problems with a prominent Portuguese bank, the default of debt payments by the Argentina government. There continues to be a lot of mergers, especially by US corporations with foreign companies and moving headquarters offshore to take advantage of lower corporate tax rates, and maybe investors were just also taking some of the profits from the recent rapid rises in stock prices. But after the build up all during the month of July and then the major dip on the last day, what does it all mean, and how should we prepare and respond? For each of us, the answer is different. But PBRMarketTools continues to provide the data and reporting to hopefully help you through this and help you make some sound decisions.
Take a deep breath, let’s see what happens in August!
