May 2017: Calm Overcomes a Mid Month Panic
By Larry C. Paxton
The first half of May saw the NASDAQ and S&P 500 stocks reaching new record highs and the DJIA slightly ahead for the month. But the market reacted very negatively on Wednesday, May 17th, with the political news that former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn may have misrepresented his involvement with Russian business and leaders. When the day was finished the implications and concerns were somewhat diminished and all 3 major US stock exchanges followed with 6-7 day positive runs that overtook the drastic 1 day drop and the NASDAQ and S&P500 establishing more record highs.
Here’s a repeat from April: The US economy continues to grow at a modest/moderate rate, with job growth, wage growth and the unemployment rate being reasonable. Business and consumer sentiment indexes show growing confidence.
Because of the current volatility and unpredictability of the US political environment investment in stocks opinions continue to range widely. There are clearly opportunities for the economy to grow and strengthen, but will political turmoil force us to start over? As the drama continues to unfold and evolve don’t wear out the edge of your seat!
