December 2015: The End of a Volatile Year,
the Start of a _________ Year???

The Oil industry had a big impact on us in 2015.
How will it affect 2016?

By Larry C. Paxton

The end  of December 2015 finally came to an end and for many it was with a big sigh of relief. For everyone it left with big question marks about what lies ahead in 2016.

Economic indices showed moderate growth at best. But the Federal Reserve finally took the big step in December 2015 of doing its first minimal interest rate hike in several years. Now the big questions are what metrics will the Fed use in 2016, how many interest rate hikes are anticipated? Oil prices plummeted, but the OPEC nations plan to maintain production. After 40 years the U.S. ban on oil exports ended, and the first shipment left on the last day of the year. Predictions on oil in 2016 are all over the place. Which logic will prevail?  U.S. car drivers have benefited from lower prices at the pump, but the expected increase in spending in other areas does not appear to have materialized. Will it in 2016? Because growth was moderate many companies found it necessary to either acquire or be acquired. Mergers and acquisitions were at a record level. Will this continue in 2016? A lot of leadership changes are scheduled for the beginning of 2016. What directions will we see from this new blood in 2016? Internationally results were mixed as well. China is experiencing less robust growth. The European economy was stagnant. The recent climate change treaty has implications for all countries involved, but what will be the level of follow up and what will be the real results?  Most experts predict a rather flat year for 2016 internationally, with continued volatility. Are the assumptions used realistic or are they just being extra cautious?    With 2015 behind us, there are an endless number of variables to consider when trying to make predictions for 2016. It is in our human nature, especially the competitive part of us, to publicly make projections, and get some recognition, especially if we have been right a few times in the past. It makes good press, but sometimes it does seem like a futile exercise in wishful thinking. As for me, I will keep my predictions private, hope for the best, but if you are more brave, let us know how you fill in the blank for yourself.

Happy New Year, let 2016 begin, let’s do our best, be optimistic, and let’s see how the year unfolds!

August and September experienced a downward trend for a variety of reasons(see previous editions of this blog). October 2015 saw a significant reverse, and at the end of the month the stock exchanges were back at their mid-August levels, and appearing ready to climb even more in the upcoming months, even though economic indices continue to be somewhat mixed, overall moderate, and feeling fragile. There is a sense that investors are weary of that same economic news over and over again, and they are ready to step out. For example, the concern over when the Federal Reserve will raise its base interest rate from 0%, the stock market showed negative volatility. Now it seems that even though the economics have not changed much the markets have still moved up anticipating the interest rate move up and now feeling it is a positive sign. It will be interesting to see if this thought has some truth to it in the coming months.

Stocks of The PBR1000 companies continued to show volatility, with all measurements hitting correction status sometime during September.  The unexpected devaluation by China of its Yuan currency was still having an impact.  There were also some mixed economic trends. The US economy is still the best overall in the world, but growth remains modest/moderate with some uncertainties. World situations might be having an impact as well, with multitudes of people evacuating Syria, as an example.  The Iran nuclear deal is not certain as Congress wrestles with its ramifications and many open questions. The 2016 US Presidential Race might be causing some spin as well.

The PBR1000 companies and stocks worldwide were hit hard with the unexpected devaluation by China of its Yuan currency. This was further compounded by what many expect to finally be a small increase in the interest rate charged by the US Federal Reserve Bank. The US economy is considered by most to continue to grow at a modest/moderate rate, and the most stable in the world. While there continues to be cautious optimism about the future, volatile August shows that the US and global economy remains vulnerable to unexpected events.

In the following tables the stock price is for the close of trading on August 31st, Month % Chg is compared to July 31st, YTD % Chg is compared to December 31, 2014, and the 20 Mos % Chg is compared to December 31, 2013.

Many of you have suggested we include a table on Market Capitalization.  PBRMarketTools.com has moved some tables around and made  Table 4 that summary. For The PBR1000 Subscribers it is a summary of Report 15.

The second half of 2015 started out with the markets climbing to near record highs by mid-month, but then a retreat. There is still mixed news on the US economy, uncertain and unresolved world events, and the marathon US Presidential Race is starting to gain momentum. Are we looking forward to all those political ads over the next 15 months?

In the following tables the stock price is for the close of trading on July 31st, Month % Chg is compared to June 30th, YTD % Chg is compared to December 31, 2014, and the 19 Mos % Chg is compared to December 31, 2013.

The PBR1000 June 2015 Stocks/Commodities Snapshots

Welcome to the World of Stock Trading!

The PBR1000 June 2015 Snapshots include news and stocks data on 1,062 companies in 15 analytical reports.

The first half of 2015 was finishing pretty strong. The NASDAQ had reached new highs, the S&P500 was closing in on a new record, and the DJIA was climbing. Then the bottom dropped out on the last few trading days, especially on June 29th. The Greek drama took most of the blame, but the moderately growing US economy still feels a little fragile, and the rest of the world appears more shaky.

This sets the stage for the 2nd half of the year. Will the Federal Reserve raise interest rates once or twice, or not at all? Will there be a Greek exit? A few other Eurozone countries continue to struggle, could there be a domino effect?

Nevertheless, every month there are a significant number of gainers over the previous month and year-to-date. There are investment opportunities.

In the following tables the stock price is for the close of trading on June 30th, Month % Chg is compared to May 29th, YTD % Chg is compared to December 31, 2014, and the 18 Mos % Chg is compared to December 31, 2013.

Should All Decisions Be Based On Data Analysis?

The PBR1000 May 2015 Snapshots include news and stocks data on 1,062 companies in 15 analytical reports.

Current The PBR1000 Subscribers should have already received the MS Excel workbook.

A unique feature of May 2015 is that after many years all the major US stock market exchanges registered new record closing highs in the same month. As temperatures rose across the US the stock markets showed less volatility, especially in the second half of May. Will that trend continue through the summer?

Key commodities also showed gains in May. But employment figures, new and used home sales, manufacturing, and many other economic indicators continue to be mixed. As a result, the Federal Reserve continues to be cautious about when it thinks it will start increasing interest rates.

In the following tables the stock price is for the close of trading on May 29th, Month % Chg is compared to April 30th, YTD % Chg is compared to December 31, 2014, and the 17 Mos % Chg is compared to December 31, 2013.

Which Directions Did Your Stocks Go In April?

The PBR1000 April 2015 Snapshots include news and stocks data on 1,065 companies in 15 analytical reports.

At the end of April it was good to see that the stock exchanges were in the black in all time ranges. However, the journey to get there still involved a lot of fluctuations throughout the month. One highlight was NASDAQ reaching a new high close during the month, the first time in years.

Economic indicators are still mixed. The Federal Reserve continues to be cautious about when it will inevitably have to start to increase interest rates and the rationale for doing justifying that action. This  sets the stage for May. It will be interesting to see how investors respond as a new set of indicators come out and company quarterly SEC reports are filed.

In the following tables the stock price is for the close of trading on April 30th, Month % Chg is compared to March 31st, YTD % Chg is compared to December 31, 2014, and the 16 Mos % Chg is compared to December 31, 2013.

The PBR1000 March 2015 Snapshots include news and stocks data on 1,076 companies in 15 analytical reports.

Current The PBR1000 Subscribers should have already received the MS Excel workbook.

The “Yo-Yo Syndrome” might be in effect in 2015. January was down, February back up, and March was down. The stock exchanges had a lot of big swing days. The DJIA was up 100 or more points on 8 trading days, and there were 7 down days. The biggest swing was a loss of  333 points on March 10.   US economic growth and stability continues to be tepid and fragile as demonstrated by jobs related data.  Rumors on when the Federal Reserve Board will raise interest rates seems to cause some of the up and downs.  The Global economy  has been somewhat shaky as well. Nevertheless, as shown in the tables below, there are some excellent results coming out of the stock market games.

Let’s see if April 2015 continues the “YoYo Syndrome” trend.

In the following tables the stock price is for the close of trading on March 31st, Month % Chg is compared to February 27th, YTD % Chg is compared to December 31, 2014, and the 15 Mos % Chg is compared to December 31, 2013.
